Paper, vinyl, fabric or stretch: which should you choose for your photos? Finish, glare, care, storage and budget — the full comparison, material by material.
You've found the perfect backdrop for your photos : now you just need to choose the material it will be printed on. Paper, vinyl, fabric or stretch ? This choice changes everything — how it looks on camera, how well it lasts over time, how you store it, the budget. Here's the full comparison to help you decide with confidence, based on your type of shoot.

Paper : the studio standard… but fragile
Roll paper (the « seamless » type) remains a classic in large studios : a perfectly uniform, matte background with no glare whatsoever. Its downside ? It's fragile and disposable : it creases, tears, gets dirty and stains for good. Every session « uses up » a few dozen centimetres that you cut away. Excellent for a high-volume fixed studio, it's not very practical for a mobile photographer or someone just starting out. It's also the least eco-friendly. We've chosen reusable materials that deliver the same matte finish, but built to last.
Vinyl : the versatile all-rounder that washes clean
Vinyl is our most versatile material. Supple and hard-wearing, it renders crisp colours and copes with anything : portraits, product packshots, food photography and, above all, the floor (you walk on it, you set props down on it). Its big advantage : it wipes clean with a single pass of a sponge — ideal when a child, a cake or some flour gets involved. Any creases from transport relax once the backdrop has been laid flat for a few hours. If you could only own one material, this would be it.
Fabric : absolute matte, light and travel-friendly
Fabric aims for the softest finish : zero glare, even under a powerful flash, for beautifully delicate portraits and newborn photos. It's light and folds down tiny : perfect for travelling or storing several backdrops without the clutter. The trade-off is that it can pick up a few creases ; a steamer or a low-temperature iron (on the reverse) smooths them out in two minutes. It's the favourite of portrait and family photographers.
Stretch : always taut, zero creases
Stretch is an elastic fabric designed to be mounted on a frame or tension system. The result : a perfectly smooth surface, without a single crease, ready in seconds. It's the « pro » solution for a permanent studio backdrop or a stand that has to look flawless at every set-up. It needs its dedicated support, but offers the quickest set-up and the sharpest finish.
How to choose based on your shoot ?
- Portrait, family : fabric (matte, light) or vinyl if you want to be able to clean it.
- Newborn : fabric — softness and zero glare.
- Product packshot, e-commerce, food : vinyl — true colours and a washable surface.
- Floor / walking on it : vinyl (or our dedicated floor mat).
- Mobile / travelling photographer : fabric — folds down tiny.
- Fixed studio, stand, permanent backdrop : stretch on a frame.
And what about size in all this ?
You choose the material after the backdrop and before the size. A backdrop that's too small ruins even the finest image : we walk you through it in our article Which studio backdrop size to choose. Good news : with us, every backdrop is printed to order, in the exact material and dimensions you need.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the most versatile material ?
Vinyl : a good finish, washable, usable as a backdrop or on the floor. It's the best starting point if you're unsure.
Which material has no glare at all ?
Fabric and stretch are perfectly matte. Vinyl also comes in a matte finish.
How do you get creases out of a fabric backdrop ?
A quick pass with a steamer, or a warm iron on the reverse. Vinyl relaxes on its own once laid flat ; stretch never creases.
Which material for shooting on the floor ?
Vinyl, hard-wearing and washable, or a dedicated floor mat designed to be walked on.
