Family photography: how to choose the right backdrop

Bringing several generations into one image calls for a well-chosen studio backdrop : large enough and neutral enough for everyone to stand out. Here are our tips for a successful family photo.

Go wide — really wide

The number-one mistake is a backdrop that is too small. For a family, aim for at least 2.5 to 3 metres wide, with extra height if children sit on shoulders. A backdrop that reaches down to the floor hides the ugly wall-to-floor line and allows poses sitting on the ground.

A colour that unites

With several different outfits, a neutral backdrop (grey, beige, white, sage green) harmonises the group. Tip: coordinate clothing within one palette and pick a backdrop that does not fight it. Very colourful or busy patterns tire the eye quickly on a group shot.

A material that copes

Children, movement, feet on the floor : a family backdrop must be sturdy and easy to clean. Matte vinyl wipes clean with a sponge and withstands traffic ; textile adds a softer, warmer touch.

Positioning everyone

  • Stagger the heads at different heights (standing, seated, kneeling) for energy.
  • Keep the group tight : bodies touching really shows in the image.
  • Leave margin around the group to crop in portrait or landscape.

Large, neutral, hard-wearing : with these three criteria, your backdrop flatters the whole family — today and in twenty years.
